The Challenge of Writing a Sequel
Just now, I’m working on a novel. It’s a sequel to my earlier work, A Distant Voice in the Darkness, set twenty years later. The writing process can feel like a slog. You must keep going without a clear destination. You never quite know where the characters will lead you. Yet, I’m holding tight and pushing through!
Discovering New Characters
Writing my short story collection, Fresh Beginnings, was a refreshing experience. I loved diving into the distinct characters that shared each of the eleven stories. You could say it was a ‘task and finish’ approach. Since the stories are short, they allow for quick bursts of creativity.
One of my narrators is unique—a bonobo. This character adds a fascinating layer to the stories.

Inspiration from Nature
I kept watching documentaries about great apes, especially those studied by primatologists like Frans de Waal. This led me to wonder: what if these apes were watching us? This idea sparked the creation of "A Touch of Natural History." It became one of the stories in the collection. Like all the other stories, it was beautifully illustrated by Kate Attfield.

Where to Find My Books
You can buy Fresh Beginnings on Kindle as well as in a slim paperback edition. I’m excited to share that A Distant Voice in the Darkness is still awaiting its Kindle edition, but you can already get the paperback version.

The Writing Process
Writing requires dedication. Often, it feels like climbing a steep hill with no summit in sight. Each day brings its challenges, but the stories inside me need to be told. The journey is filled with ups and downs, but perseverance is vital.
When working on characters, I focus on their backgrounds. Understanding their histories helps me write more genuine dialogue and interactions. I aim to create depth, ensuring readers can relate to or understand these fictional lives.
Why Character Development Matters
Character development is critical in making a story compelling. Each character should grow throughout the narrative. Their challenges and successes should resonate with the reader. When readers connect emotionally with a character, they become more invested in the story's outcome.
Whether it’s the bonobo in my story or a distant heroine from my novel, each character represents a piece of the human experience.
Final Thoughts
As I continue writing, I reflect on what I’ve learned from past projects. Every story teaches me something new about crafting narratives and character arcs. I appreciate the journey of creation.
If you’re also in the midst of similar challenges, know you’re not alone. Each writer has moments of doubt, but the stories we carry are worth telling. Let’s keep writing, sharing, and connecting through our words.
In the end, writing is not just about the destination. It’s about the journey and the experiences we gather along the way.
