The Richness of Local Stories
We have a fantastic free magazine available in various parts of north Cardiff. The version where I live is called Rhiwbina Living. Over the years, I have learned a lot of fascinating information about the area. This includes details about old farms and buildings, stories of people who used to live and work here, and, of course, many delightful recipes. The magazine also features inspiring news from local schools. Additionally, there's usually a short story included, which prompted me to submit one from my latest collection, FRESH BEGINNINGS. But which story should I choose?

A Story to Capture Attention
I decided to select the story that begins with a car crash on the A470, a road that everyone in north Cardiff uses. I thought this would grab attention. However, the editor mentioned that it was a bit too long for the magazine and asked me to shorten it. I was glad to comply. Today, Rhiwbina; tomorrow, the world…
This story is one of two in the collection that explores the theme of an outsider who is not entirely welcomed by certain locals. The other story, THE MATCH, is set near St Albans in Hertfordshire. It revolves around a young German lad whose church sent him to stay with a local family shortly after the Second World War. Understandably, he faces some unfriendly comments. A Dutchman once told me that such a scheme would never have been considered in the Netherlands, given their experience of being occupied by the Nazis.
The Chosen Story: THE OCARINA
The story I ultimately chose for Cardiff is THE OCARINA. It is narrated by a young Japanese engineer who accidentally crashes his aunt’s car into one driven by a local woman from the neighbourhood. Unfortunately, he only has third-party insurance. As a result, she sends him up the valleys to Porth for assistance from her elderly father, a retired motor mechanic who was once a prisoner of the Japanese in Burma. This sets the stage for a tense encounter between the two characters that needs resolution.

The Importance of Local Connections
Local magazines like Rhiwbina Living play a crucial role in fostering community spirit. They connect residents through shared stories and experiences. Each issue brings a fresh perspective on life in our neighbourhood. It highlights the unique aspects of our community that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Engaging with the Community
Engaging with the community is essential for building relationships. By sharing stories, we create a sense of belonging. The tales of our neighbours, their struggles, and triumphs resonate with us. They remind us that we are not alone in our experiences.
Celebrating Local Heritage
Celebrating local heritage is another vital aspect of community magazines. They often feature historical anecdotes and profiles of long-standing residents. This helps preserve our collective memory and ensures that future generations understand their roots.
Conclusion: A Call to Action
I encourage everyone to explore their local magazines. They are treasure troves of information and inspiration. Whether it's recipes, stories, or news about local events, there is always something new to discover.
